This means that cities are connected by big roads, called “Autostrada” (plural "Autostrade") in Italian, which are perfect for traveling by car. So using a car hire is a good idea!
Since you are going to travel Italy with a rental car, here are some things to consider:
The quickest way to travel is via the Autostrada, but keep in mind that these are toll roads, so have some coins handy for the tolls! If you do not want to pay the toll, look for roads marked as “ss” (strade statali) that run parallel to the Autostrada. These are toll-free, generally longer than Autostrada, but also make for more scenic routes. Italian drivers get a bad reputation for being aggressive, but that is mostly a rumor.
